This story held my interest throughout the entire read, although the writing style is much different than I'm used to reading. The story line flowed smoothly for me, yet, I would have preferred a bit more detail in various parts of the book. Even so, I believe Ms. Strauhs did a very good job in depicting the hardships of life and what one would need, or have to do, to survive and maintain without specific ammenities of life such as electricity.I believe the story itself is plausible and realistic, in that; foreign invaders could very well strike our shores, or this country be taken from within. I like how the author presented many who had planned ahead for a day like this, by preparing bunkers, canned goods and storing away for future use, having wind turbines put in, etc. Some great imagination went into how the survivors dealt with the enemy and what they did to contend with those threats.
I felt the ending was wrapped up way to fast, however, it didn't take away from the whole of the story.
Anyway...this is the second novel I've read by this author, and I would read more from her in this genre.

Storyline had a bit too much happening at once as to the fall of America. No big editing errors as so many of e-books seem to be. The ending felt very rushed and unfinished. Why can't these authors give us a complete book without a sequel. There is a way to complete the book and have a sequel if you just have to have one but this book didn't do that. Other than 2 natural causes deaths this family seemed to suffer no ill effects other than bathing inadequacies and boredom. They never had to ration food and as soon as a problem popped up a solution was found.so overall an OK read but not a lot of nail biting.
The author had a little different approach to the typical doomsday story. It makes the reader wonder what do you know about your neighbor and how much would you trust them. It is also makes the reader think about the relationship between the USA and China. It also has some good ideas about how to prepare I look forward to more stories from the author.
The questions raised here are more important then anything else, what could you do for your family to survive is something happens. The people off Lousianna showed us how fast things can go bad after something happens. Or even the people of LA, they showed us real human nature. Remember we live in a country where we have more respect for live then most others. Just watch the news if you dont believe me,
Absolutely one of the dullest books I have read.The USA is invaded and WW3 begins so instead of an engaging tale of survival we get an seemingly endless parade of such topics as whats for dinner and how to do laundry.
Most of the book telling of the actual invasion is done by describing what the characters saw or heard on TV and radio and what lttle contact with the invaders by the protagonists is briefly described with little detail then it's back to detailed desriptions of what's for dinner.
And most of this is done by,in the authors own words "Seals and Special Forces",Seals are a branch of Special forces,if you're writing a book at least do some research.
Same with firearms,if you're going to make them a central part of your story,learn something about them'
In the stories setting describing them in generic terms is just lazy writing.
A few people die from natural causes and there is a good deal of crying throughout the book.
If there is no tension,drama or action involved you end up with a endless tale about toilet paper and what to make for dinner
Spare yourself and spend your money and time on something better.
Worth the money, and worth the time to read. Writing is not really the greatest. Better than I could do, but then I'm not asking anyone to read my story. It would make it a little easier to read if I didn't feel like everyone was talking like a robot all the time. People just don't talk like that. The author tends to use dialog to explain situations and ideas that might be better explained outside of dialog. The situation was interesting and well thought out. Keep writing.
The story was very good and even unique considering the majority of books in this genre use an EMP AS their cause for "end of times". Two reasons it didn't get a five star rating is the author never made any of the characters relatable. I didn't feel much when their was a death and second, the ending just happened!! You were left thinking "what??? but what about this? or what about that???" Very disappointing when the book was SO GOOD!! You couldn't put it down. I hope their is a second book but nothing was insinuated.
I love reading this author, they make everything so believable, even in fiction. this book makes you think, hat if something happened, what if I had to find a safe place, as not everyone has that option. in this day and age, we often know nothing, or little of our neighbors, and this work makes you think.
I enjoyed ho the family and friends pull together and some of what they come up against, you would never think about. this is one of those books I would recommend for folks that are becoming aware that maybe things are not as they seem.
I enjoy this authors' common folks feeling in their writings.
